Robert Burton’s Journal in Sound Arts as we know it to be.

into element 2

The 1st lecture from Gareth was much different from Ingrid’s style and very interesting. His presentation style was much more direct and asked us questions with answers he knew rather than what we thought or felt about certain topics or compositions.

Anyway…

I felt as though we were going over a few things we had briefly touched on earlier in the year with Mark regarding the Music Concrete, however, the task given to us (create an original music concrete composition from our own field recordings) was very interesting and forced me to work in a more instinctive way given the time constraint. I decided to head to the library as I thought the quietness would make certain sounds stick out amongst the silence. Instead, I found a very interesting sound in a corner of the library: an air con system. It held a constant tone and created a bit if soft noise. I also sampled some of the mechanical sounds from my film camera. Unfortunately, I lost all the samples I recorded this day, although I appreciate having found a new approach to sampling through field recording in a way that puts the “searching” for sounds at the forefront, rather than finding sounds for the context of a specific composition. I am currently considering this practice to be integrated into one of the methods in creating the final composition for this module.
