Robert Burton’s Journal in Sound Arts as we know it to be.

Intro to global sonic cultures

The word ethnography means the study of different cultures, their habits, customs and mutual differences. It is directly linked to the title of the module and throughout the following lectures we will be studying in this field in relation to sound.

Autoethnography simply means to study one’s own culture, the situation they are in, their own habits, and mode of existence unique to themselves. This may be important in some lectures to come if we come across people who document their own sonic culture and habits.

Global… what does it mean?

“A sort of paradox: between shared or whole human community and intersectionality where we all share the earth however we are divided as we are different forms of peoples with different cultures and lifestyles.” This was my interpretation at least, however the definitive meaning is “in reference to the whole world”.

Contemporary…

Refers to what is happening in the present tense across different places in the world.

No sense of the future as a strict goal or as a better lifestyle in comparison to futurist views. It makes me ask the question how long can something remain contemporary before it is viewed as part of a period of time?

Modernity: 20th century concept, age of industry and global connectivity

(social period)

Modernism: (new art movements so often) Art movements

Post modern: 21st century, Science became dominant force in society.

Established more in 1970s. Assumption that life is better through technological and scientific development.

I suppose these period labels show how certain lengths of time can be viewed as having their own culture much like how we can attribute certain communities to labels and titles. Cultures and subcultures are dependent on time and place.

People tend to be a result of their environment of place and time but also their choices and communal relationships formed. People create cultures but cultures can shape people’s way of thinking, habits and actions.
